Double Rainbow over OJA

Recently, Old Jamestown Association Board Member Chan Mahanta shared with us a double rainbow picture over the Missouri River taken from behind his home.

“A double rainbow occurs when sunlight reflects twice inside raindrops, resulting in a fainter, secondary rainbow with inverted colors compared to the primary rainbow, which is formed by a single reflection. The dark area of unlit sky between the primary and secondary rainbows is called Alexander’s band. “

Mr. Mahanta is an accomplished and award-winning watercolor artist.  He often shares his work on his Facebook page.  His painting The Storm was selected for the stage set of Donnybrook’s annual Donnybash! episode in the Sheldon Theater.  You can see The Storm at the 1:45 mark in the YouTube video below of the May 8, 2025, program.
